Is the image re-compressed?
No, for JPG, PNG and WebP the pixel data is copied byte for byte. The one exception: a JPG that relies on an EXIF rotation tag is re-saved upright so it does not appear sideways.
What is removed exactly?
JPG: all APP1 to APP15 segments (EXIF, XMP, Photoshop) and comments. PNG: text, time and EXIF chunks. WebP: EXIF and XMP chunks.
Is it really private?
Yes. The tool is code that runs in your browser tab. Your PNGs are never sent to a server. Open the network tab and check. Nobody is watching. Goon in peace.

What is hiding in a photo

A phone photo usually carries the GPS coordinates of where it was taken, the exact time, the phone model, sometimes a thumbnail of the original and the editing software used. Posting it shares all of that. This tool drops every such segment: EXIF, XMP, IPTC, Photoshop blocks and comments in JPG; text, time and EXIF chunks in PNG; EXIF and XMP in WebP.

The image data is copied byte for byte, so there is no quality loss and the file only gets smaller. The one exception is a JPG that relies on an orientation tag: it is re-saved upright so it does not turn sideways once the tag is gone. Colour profiles can be kept with a switch.
