The tool finds the colour that touches the edges of the picture and removes every connected pixel of it, keeping whatever it surrounds. That covers logos on white, icons on a flat colour, sketches on paper, screenshots, product photos on a plain backdrop and rendered graphics. It is a colour cut, not a machine-learning segmentation, so busy photo backgrounds are better handled by hand in the editor with the wand and the eraser.
Tolerance decides how far a pixel may differ from the background colour and still go: raise it for gradients and JPG noise, lower it when the subject shares the background’s hue. A soft edge of a pixel or two blends the cut so the result composites cleanly on any colour. The output is always PNG so the transparency survives.
